The City Council is considering changes to its existing city taxi ordinance to add new requirements aimed at improving the quality of taxi service in Boise.
Over the last several years the City has experienced an increased number of complaints from residents and visitors about the quality of taxi service both at the airport and throughout the city. If approved, all Boise taxi companies would be required to meet the new standards in order to be licensed by the City.
The requirements include, among others:
- Requiring all taxi vehicles to accept debit/credit cards.
- Establishing a five-year age limit on vehicles being licensed as taxis. Existing taxis would be exempt, and vehicles up to 10 years old could be licensed with more stringent inspections.
- Banning smoking in taxis by drivers and passengers.
- Requiring taxis to pick up and transport passengers regardless of destination.
- Requiring taxi drivers to demonstrate sufficient familiarity with the English language to communicate with passengers and navigate to destinations.
