Support the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at a march and rally on Jan. 18, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Events begin at 9:30 a.m. in Boise State University’s Student Union Hatch Ballroom with sign making, films and speakers. The march will commence at about 10:45 a.m.
The annual event commemorates the legacy of the civil rights movement in America, King’s place in that legacy and the dedication of rally participants to his ideals.
This year’s theme is “Back to Basics: Expanding the Dream.” Marchers will be led from the Student Union Building along University Drive to Capitol Boulevard. They will proceed up Capitol Boulevard to City Hall, where a rally will take place until noon.
The rally features community speakers and the winners of the annual MLK student essay contest. Immediately following the rally, the Idaho Human Rights Commission will host an associated event in the Capitol.
Free parking during the poster making, march and rally will be available in the Lincoln Parking Garage across from the Student Union. Participants may park in any space that is not designated by a sign. A pay station is available on each floor by the staircase, and the first-floor machine is located in the lobby of the staircase. Enter your space number, select “all day” then enter coupon code 20100078.
Participants are encouraged to plan ahead for transportation arrangements should they need to return to campus following the rally.
A full week of related events is planned Jan. 23-29, including a free keynote address by civil rights advocate, Princeton professor and author Cornel West at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom.
